Malaysia's favourite; Sepet is this November's skrin@temu focus
Before Sepet charmed its audience, it had to be made. Hear the story behind the story as Elyna and Pete look back on bringing it to life.
Curated by Elyna Shukri, Skrin@Temu creates a space for films to be experienced not just on screen, but through conversation and exchange. The series brings filmmakers, audiences and curious minds together in an intimate setting at Temu House, encouraging deeper engagement with the stories and perspectives that shape our local film landscape.
We’re also blessed to get an event better screening experience with our sponsors; TSL (Team Sound & Light) who are one of Malaysia’s most experienced and respected entertainment industry supplier, with a rich history that began in the early 2000.

Sepet
Sepet (2005) is a Malaysian romantic comedy-drama film directed by Yasmin Ahmad. It is the second installment in her semi-autobiographical Orked Trilogy
Directed by Yasmin Ahmad, it tells of a love that blooms between a Chinese boy and a Malay girl. Sepet is a Malay word which, in this context, refers to the 'slit eyes' of the Chinese.
The Meet-Cute: Orked visits Jason’s market stall looking for movies starring her favorite actor. They strike up a conversation, and an unlikely, tender romance blossoms between them
Social & Cultural Pressures: As their relationship deepens, they have to navigate the invisible walls of race, religion, and societal expectations in Malaysia. They face gossip, skepticism from friends, and cultural taboos regarding interethnic dating, though Orked's open-minded parents offer a refreshing contrast of warmth and acceptance
A conversation with Pete Abdullah & Elyna Shukri
Moderated by Lina Tan
Pete Abdullah If you only make time for one conversation this week, make it Pete Abdullah. For years he was Yasmin Ahmad’s right hand on every film, TV commercial and passion project she made, so he’s seen up close how an idea becomes a story people remember. As a director of photography in his own right, he also knows how to make every frame carry feeling. Few people have both the director’s instinct and the cinematographer’s eye, and Pete has both. Half an hour with him could change how you see your next project, and it may be the most useful half hour on your calendar.
Elyna Shukri
Every Yasmin Ahmad project you’ve loved had someone making sure it actually happened. On many of her films, TV commercials and passion projects, that person was Elyna Shukri. As producer, she protected Yasmin’s vision while juggling the budgets, schedules and countless moving parts behind it, which takes both a creative heart and a steady hand. She knows what it takes to carry a story from idea to screen without losing its soul.
