When Benang Met Kayu
An artist sharing session with Afiza Abu Bakar (Magicthinking) & Hani Ali (Lain Furniture)
Join us for an artist sharing session with Afiza Abu Bakar (Magicthinking) and Hani Ali (Lain Furniture) as they discuss their collaborative process behind the exhibition Di Antara Benang & Kayu.
Afiza weaves softness with intention, while Hani shapes wood with instinct, and through co-making, they’ve transformed these contrasts into hybrid art-furniture pieces.
A conversation about material, trust, and the art of creating together.
Extra Information:
Afiza:
“We’ll be weaving on a small board loom, lightweight and easy to hold. The tools are simple, keeping the process open and stress-free—no complicated setup, just your hands, your breath, and the steady movement of thread.
The size of the weaving allows you to complete it without rushing, giving you space to explore color and texture, noticing how your attention and mood shape the piece. Once finished, we’ll turn your weaving into a small clasp purse with a keychain—a soft little container for something you cherish, carrying with it the memory of a quiet, mindful moment.”
About Weaving
Weaving is a process of transforming long thin threads or yarns, into a new material. It is the process of crossing threads together, to create a new shared surface. A long thread moves over and under another, and through this repeated motion, a surface slowly grows. Through small repeated movements, many separate strands become one connected piece.
About Afiza Abu Bakar
My name is Afiza, and I’m a textile artist. My main medium of creation is weaving, although I also use embroidery, knitting, and dyeing as additional techniques to achieve what I would like to express or show.
I have been weaving for a little more than 10 years, and still consider myself a young weaver with so much more to learn. My weaving philosophy is based on the Saori weaving, where I was and still training as a weaver. I emphasize more on the process to lead the outcome of many of my projects. Currently in this exhibition, I have collaborated with Hani from Lain furniture, to create works that break barriers especially in how I have been weaving all these while, making wearables, and sometimes tapestries. Working textiles into furniture gives me excitement, and hope for a wider participation of my work in many areas of life.
So without talking more about myself, let's get into what weaving is. Weaving and woven items are actually almost everywhere in our daily lives. We protect ourselves with woven items, the cloth. So here are the basic ideas of weaving if some of you have never thought about how clothes are woven.
