Soul in the Tropics 

A solo exhibition by South Korean Artist YeonYeon Jung,

from her residency at Bon Ton Locale, Langkawi

As a travelling Korean visual artist, my creative journey has brought me to the vibrant island of Langkawi, where the ambience (환경) & people have become a central source of energy for my work.

Through this Malaysia Series, I explore the interplay of culture and identity, blending my Korean heritage with the unique essence of Malaysia. I am particularly moved by the grace and resilience of Malay women, expressed through the flowing forms of their tudung (headscarves). These garments, with their delicate patterns and symbolic layers, embody stories of tradition and individuality.

The installation, Tropic Fixed Stars is an attempt to capture and present an atmospheric residency environment, which I am thankful for. The brilliance of Langkawi days— lush greens, radiant blues, and bursts of tropical colours—fuels my palette, while the vast starry skies of tranquil nights bring a sense of introspection to my compositions. 

Ultimately, Soul in the Tropics is an acknowledgment of the warm welcome I have received in Malaysia, a place which has allowed me the connection and belonging to a supposed foreign land.

Artist Bio : 

Yeonyeon Jung is a multimedia artist from South Korea. She is currently participating in a residency at BonTon Locale, Langkawi.

Her work has been featured in exhibitions such as: One Plus at Art Space Hoseo in Seoul (2024)

Myoryeongjeon Winter Festival at COEX Seoul (2023)

Before Forest at COEX Seoul (2022).

She has also held several solo exhibitions, including her latest;

50 Day, at Sapporo Tenjinyama Art Studio in Japan (2024).
